North Lakhimpur: The 70th foundation anniversary of Assam’s North Lakhimpur College, now a university, was celebrated on Thursday in a day-long programme.
Vice-Chancellor Mukul Chandra Bora inaugurated the celebration by hoisting the flag.
Maharajat Jayanti Celebration Committee President Uday Shankar Hazarika and dignitaries from various fields of Lakhimpur district also hoisted 75 flags.
The General Secretary of the Celebration Committee, Diganta Kalita, paid tribute to the deceased. Afterwards, the President and Secretary of the University Students’ Union paid tributes to the martyrs.
In conjunction with the Maharajat Jayanti, the Assamese Department also organised an exhibition featuring photographs of distinguished personalities, principals and professors who have served the institute since its establishment to date, as well as photographs of important moments in the long journey of the institute.
The ceremonial lamp was lit at the statue of former North Lakhimpur College Principal Jogananda Bargohain by University Registrar Biman Chandra Chetia.
The opening ceremony was chaired by the President of the Celebration Committee, Uday Shankar Hazarika. The welcome speech was delivered by Vice-Chancellor Mukul Chandra Bora, and the objectives were explained by the Secretary of the Celebration Committee, Diganta Kalita.
Inaugurating the opening ceremony, Madhavdev University Vice-Chancellor Arupjyoti Chowdhury said that no matter how many sources of knowledge there are, there is no basic source except books.
The meeting was attended by Gopal Chandra Hazarika, a former student and retired professor of Dibrugarh University. He recalled the days he left the institution and addressed the students.
A book, Jatindranath Duwara’s Life and Poetic Talent, by late Govind Mohan Deka, former professor of North Lakhimpur College, was launched at the function.
Retired Principal Pushpanath Bora, former MLA Devananda Hazarika, Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, Nowboicha MLA Jaiprakash Das and Ranganadi MLA Rishiraj Hazarika attended the meeting.
