Guwahati: Padma Shri awardee and veteran Sattriya exponent Gopiram Borgohain, who served as the Budha Bhakta of Sri Sri Uttara Kamalabari Satra, passed away at the age of 103, Assam minister Ranoj Pegu said on Monday, September 14.
Taking to X, Pegu described Borgohain as a revered Vaishnavite artist and a living legend of Assam’s Sattriya tradition. He said Borgohain’s lifelong contributions had played a significant role in preserving and enriching the state’s Vaishnavite cultural heritage.
Borgohain made notable contributions to various forms of Sattriya and Vaishnavite culture, including Sattriya Ojapali, devotional music, dance and acting. He was also known for his expertise in reciting religious scriptures.
Paying tribute to the veteran artist, Pegu said his death represented an irreparable loss to the Sattriya cultural tradition. The minister also conveyed his condolences to Borgohain’s family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
Borgohain was closely associated with Sri Sri Uttara Kamalabari Satra, one of Assam’s important institutions for the preservation and promotion of Sattriya culture and the Vaishnavite tradition.
His passing marks the loss of one of the state’s oldest practitioners and custodians of its rich traditional performing arts heritage.
