Imphal: A tense security situation unfolded at Gaidimjang Part 2 (Samlengtiang) under Khoupum police station in Manipur after suspected cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) exchanged gunfire on Sunday evening.
According to reports, the exchange of fire began around 6:10 pm and continued for nearly 30 minutes before ending at approximately 6:40 pm. Authorities said no casualties or injuries were reported from either side.
The incident, however, caused panic among residents and disrupted normal life in the area. Farmers returning home from their fields, along with motorists and passengers travelling through nearby routes, were caught in the middle of the gunfire, forcing many to halt their journey until the situation eased.
Security forces faced difficulties in reaching the area immediately as darkness descended over the hilly terrain, delaying reinforcement and access to the site of the encounter.
The incident has drawn concern from local organisations, which have called for an immediate end to armed confrontations.
In a statement, the Rongmei Luh Phuam (RLP), a women’s organisation based in the Khoupum area, blamed the NSCN-IM for triggering the clash. The organisation alleged that NSCN-IM cadres arrived by vehicle, got down near Irang Bridge and proceeded on foot into an area under ZUF influence, leading to the exchange of fire.
Expressing concern over repeated armed confrontations in residential and farming areas, the RLP urged both groups to stop hostilities and resolve differences through dialogue.
Meanwhile, the Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi (ZWAD) also expressed concern over the recurring clashes. The organisation appealed to civil society organisations across Zeliangrong areas to remain neutral and avoid taking sides.
According to ZWAD, partisan statements or one-sided condemnations could deepen divisions within the community and weaken the role of civil society in promoting peace and long-term stability in the region.
