Manipur Independence Day event
KSO, ZSF and HSA demand action after 50 students were hospitalised during a Manipur Independence Day event.

Imphal: The Kuki Studentsโ€™ Organisation (KSO), Zomi Studentsโ€™ Federation (ZSF) and Hmar Studentsโ€™ Association (HSA) have jointly criticised the Churachandpur district administration over what they described as serious lapses in arrangements and a lack of concern for students who fell ill during the 80th Independence Day celebrations.

More than 50 students reportedly suffered dehydration and suspected heat stroke during the celebrations and were taken to the District Hospital for medical treatment.

In a joint statement, the three student organisations alleged that students participating in the march-past had undergone several days of intensive practice without adequate refreshments or basic welfare facilities. On the day of the event, they were also required to remain in the open under the scorching sun for prolonged periods.

The groups contrasted this with the arrangements made for government officials and VIP guests, who were provided shaded seating and refreshments. They said the disparity in facilities contributed to the students becoming severely dehydrated and requiring emergency medical attention.

The student bodies also expressed dissatisfaction with the response of the district administration after the incident. They alleged that no senior representative of the administration visited the hospital to meet the affected students or their families.

According to the organisations, such a visit could have demonstrated concern for the students, reassured anxious parents and acknowledged the importance of prioritising their health and safety during official events.

While accepting that some discomfort is possible during large outdoor gatherings, the KSO, ZSF and HSA said the hospitalisation of more than 50 students pointed to serious shortcomings in event planning and welfare arrangements.

They demanded immediate corrective measures, including comprehensive safety and welfare provisions for students participating in future public programmes.

The student organisations also warned that they could call for schools and students to stay away from future district-administered events if the administration fails to issue an apology and take concrete steps to prevent a recurrence.
