Imphal: Prominent Kuki leader and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing on Thursday raised serious concerns in the Assembly over the severe hardships facing residents of Kangpokpi district due to the prolonged communal conflict in Manipur.
Speaking during the eighth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Hangshing urged the state government to urgently improve access to essential services and scale up support for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
She noted that the ongoing unrest has severely disrupted education, livelihoods, and the supply of essential commodities.
While acknowledging that state security arrangements enabled her and the Saikul Lok Sabha MP to attend the session after nearly three years, Hangshing placed three critical demands before the House under Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s administration.
First, she urged the establishment of a Central government recruitment examination centre at the Kangpokpi district headquarters.
Security fears and travel risks have prevented local youth from appearing for competitive exams, forcing many to travel as far as Ukhrul.
Second, the MLA called for uninterrupted supplies of food, fuel, and lifesaving medicines, revealing that Saikul residents have been deprived of essentials for over three and a half months due to economic blockades.
Finally, Hangshing flagged the dismal conditions in Churachandpur relief camps. Citing a recent visit, she highlighted severe overcrowding, unhygienic conditions, a lack of privacy for women, and inadequate financial assistance for rebuilding destroyed homes.
She pressed the government to expedite housing reconstruction and boost rations to restore long-term stability and peace in the state.
