Imphal: A local court in Imphal on Tuesday convicted 58-year-old Md. Abdul Halim for the 2013 murder of his wife at their rented home in Golapati Maning Leikai Tangki Makhong in Manipur’s Imphal East district.
The judgment was delivered after final arguments were heard on June 24, concluding a long-running legal battle led by the state prosecution.
The case began on June 14, 2013, after the victim’s son filed a complaint at the local police station. According to police records, Halim stabbed his wife with a knife inside their residence at around 5:40 pm that evening.
Family members and neighbours rushed the critically injured woman to Public Hospital in Hatta, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Following the attack, Halim fled to a nearby house to hide. Police tracked him down and arrested him at around 7 pm the same day. Inspector Kishore Kumar Salam led the investigation and filed the chargesheet after gathering evidence.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented 15 key witnesses, 21 documentary exhibits and eight material exhibits recovered from the scene. The accused also testified as the sole defence witness.
The judge found Halim guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The court issued a fresh arrest warrant and directed the Officer-in-Charge of Porompat Police Station to produce the convict before the court for final sentencing and further legal proceedings.
