Guwahati: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police has arrested a sixth leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in connection with violence during a black flag bike rally on August 19.
Banjop Dkhar, president of the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle, was arrested near NEIGRIHMS on Friday night, a KSU leader said on Saturday. He is expected to be produced before a court.
With Dkhar’s arrest, the total number of KSU leaders taken into custody in the case has risen to six.
Five other senior KSU leaders are already in custody. They include president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, general secretary Reuben Najiar, assistant organising secretary Jeremaiah Pohthmi, and Mihngi Circle general secretary Samuel Kharbani.
Police have invoked provisions of the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in connection with the alleged unlawful assembly and violence.
The SIT is continuing its investigation into the incidents surrounding the rally.
