Guwahati: The Northeast could move beyond being a beneficiary of space technology and emerge as a creator of space-based solutions, with its geography and strategic location offering opportunities in connectivity, disaster management, Earth observation, manufacturing and national security.
This was the central theme on the first day of the Northeast India Space Workshop 2026, organised in Guwahati by the Space Industry Association of India (SIA-India) in partnership with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC).
Held under the theme โLeveraging Space Technology: Regional Transformation to Global Reachโ, the workshop brought together policymakers, space institutions, industry leaders, defence experts and technology companies to discuss how the region can build a stronger presence in India’s rapidly expanding private space economy.
โFor the first time, SIA-India is taking its national space-industry dialogue beyond New Delhi and bringing it to the Northeast. This is more than a change of location, it is a change in perspective,โ said SIA-India president Subba Rao Pavuluri.
He said India’s space economy was becoming more distributed, private and application-driven, making it important for industry discussions to reach regions where new opportunities, challenges, talent and enterprises are emerging.
Focus shifts from satellites to services
The discussions placed particular emphasis on how space technology can translate into practical services on the ground.
For Assam and the wider Northeast, participants identified satellite communications, Earth observation, geospatial intelligence and space-derived data as areas that could strengthen planning and delivery in critical sectors.
โThe vision is not about how many satellites are launched, but about how effectively space technology can translate better data and real-time information into action on the ground,โ said Pallav Gopal Jha, Secretary, Science & Technology, Government of Assam.
He said the challenge was to bridge the gap between knowledge and action so that information reaches citizens, officials and ground workers in time to prepare and respond.
Assam seen as potential regional hub
The workshop also discussed the possibility of developing a Vision 2030 for the Northeast’s participation in India’s New Space economy, with Assam positioned as a potential economic and institutional centre for the region.
Satinder Kumar Bhalla, Secretary, North Eastern Council, said the focus should extend beyond 2030.
โThe question before us is not simply what the Northeast will look like in 2030, but what vision we must build today to shape its journey towards 2047.โ
The region’s location also gives it a potential role in India’s growing economic and strategic engagement with Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
Participants noted that challenges posed by the Northeast’s terrain could themselves provide opportunities for developing and testing space-enabled solutions in areas such as connectivity, disaster resilience, Earth observation and border awareness.
Push for local startups and manufacturing
The workshop also turned attention to whether the Northeast can develop its own space-industry supply chain.
S.P. Agarwal, Director, NESAC, said the region should not be viewed merely as a consumer of space technology.
โWe must reimagine the Northeast not merely as a user of space technology, but as a creator of space-based solutions.โ
Discussions covered opportunities for MSMEs, startups and local industries in space and semiconductor manufacturing, along with the need for infrastructure, skills, investment and supportive policy frameworks.
SIA-India Director General Anil Prakash said the objective was to build an ecosystem that allows enterprises from the Northeast not only to bring solutions into the region but also to develop products that can eventually reach national and international markets.
Centre for Space Entrepreneurship proposed
A key initiative discussed at the workshop is a proposed Centre for Space Entrepreneurship in Assam, being developed by SIA-India in collaboration with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and the Assam government.
The centre is expected to provide startups and innovators with access to mentorship, industry networks, technical expertise and market linkages.
It will also be linked with the Centre of Excellence in Space Technology in Bengaluru, creating a connection between emerging enterprises in the Northeast and established space-technology ecosystems elsewhere in the country.
The proposed network is intended to facilitate the exchange of ideas, technical knowledge and industry experience while helping regional startups connect with India’s wider space sector.
Security and strategic dimensions
The workshop also brought a strategic dimension to the discussion, with defence and security experts highlighting the Northeast’s location and its proximity to India’s international borders.
The region’s potential applications extend from communications and disaster management to Earth observation, geospatial intelligence and border awareness.
Solutions developed for the Northeast’s difficult terrain and operational requirements could potentially have applications in other parts of India and neighbouring markets.
The workshop brought together representatives from the North Eastern Council, Assam government, NESAC, SIA-India, BSNL, Hughes Communications India, Gilat Satellite Networks, KPMG India, XDLINX Space Labs, GalaxEye and other organisations.
Former Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Rana Kalita, AISF managing director Nayanjyoti Goswami, Spacefaring Technologie managing director Saraj J. Saikia and other industry and institutional representatives also participated.
From potential to participation
The second day of the workshop will include Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, adding another state-level perspective to the discussions.
The larger question emerging from the workshop is whether the Northeast can translate its geographic and strategic advantages into an actual space-industry ecosystemโwith startups, skilled talent, manufacturing capacity and locally developed solutions.
