Imphal: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has urged the authorities to launch an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the deadly ambush on Assam Rifles personnel by unidentified gunmen near the Lungshang River along National Highway 202 on July 6.
TNL, the apex civil society organisation representing the Tangkhul Naga community, primarily based in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act that threatens peace and stability in the region.
The ambush, which occurred at around 1:45 pm, claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles personnel Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh both attached to the 40 Assam Rifles unit stationed at Shangshak.
Expressing profound grief over the loss of lives, the organisation extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. It stated that the violent incident has dealt a serious blow to the ongoing peace-building initiatives undertaken by Tangkhul civil society organisations in conflict-affected Manipur.
As no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the TNL Working Committee has called on the concerned authorities to swiftly identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice through a fair and transparent investigation.
The organisation also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumours or engaging in baseless accusations. It warned that misinformation and attempts to assign blame without evidence could further inflame tensions and undermine the fragile environment of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect in the state.
