Meghalaya Shillong violence
Meghalaya government assures compensation for Assam-registered vehicles damaged in Shillong violence and treatment costs for those injured.

Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has assured compensation for Assam-registered vehicles damaged during the August 19 violence in Shillong and said it will bear the medical expenses of people injured in the incident.

The assurance comes amid heightened tensions between Assam and Meghalaya following violence during a Khasi Studentsโ€™ Union (KSU) black-flag motorcycle rally in Shillong. Several vehicles were damaged during the incident, while some people were reportedly injured.

A high-level meeting between officials of the two states was held in Guwahati on August 22 to discuss the situation and steps to restore normal movement between Assam and Meghalaya. Assam Minister Atul Bora and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar participated in the discussions.

The Meghalaya government also expressed regret over the violence and indicated that action would be taken against those responsible for the damage and attacks.

The developments come as transport movement between the neighbouring states remains affected following protests in Jorabat. Assam-based transport workers had blocked vehicles travelling from Meghalaya in response to the Shillong violence, demanding compensation for damaged vehicles and action against those responsible.

The assurance on compensation and medical expenses is expected to help ease tensions between the two states and address concerns raised by affected vehicle owners and passengers.

Authorities in Assam and Meghalaya are now working to restore normal interstate movement and prevent further incidents as security remains heightened at key locations.
