Guwahati: Five people have been arrested after the death of Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das, with police now probing a possible connection between the incident and an alleged drug network in Assam’s Juria.
Das, the officer-in-charge of the Laisong police outpost in Assamโs Dima Hasao district, was carrying out a night naka-checking operation when a vehicle hit him.
The death was initially viewed as an accident, but investigators later began examining the possibility of a planned attack.
Selim Uddin, whom police have named as the main accused, was arrested during follow-up operations.
Sources have described him as an alleged wholesale drug dealer and the suspected operator of a drug network in Juria.
The other four arrested are Uddinโs brother Mohidul Islam, his father Abdul Kuddus Farazi, Muffazzol Islam from Juriaโs Boriguri area and Ruksana Khatun alias Pinki from Kadamoni Pathar.
Police are investigating whether the alleged drug operation had any role in Dasโs death and whether the officer was attacked because his naka-checking duty could have led to police action against the network.
All five accused remain in police custody as inquiries are underway.
