Aizawl: In a rare display of political unity, major political parties in Mizoram have joined hands to safeguard the integrity of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 of the electoral roll, a party leader said.
In a joint resolution adopted during an all-party meeting convened by the influential student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) in Aizawl, the political parties called for stricter action against fraudulent voter registrations and an extension of the revision deadline.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the People’s Conference (PC), the leader said.
The joint resolution described the SIR exercise undertaken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) as vital for protecting the electoral rights of genuine citizens.
The parties pledged to extend full cooperation to ensure that the revision is conducted in a fair, transparent and credible manner. They also pledged to stand united against any attempts by non-genuine citizens to enter the electoral roll during the ongoing hearings.
They agreed to issue internal directives instructing party workers and members not to assist or support unauthorised applicants.
Strongly condemning the use of forged or fabricated documents to obtain voter registration, the parties urged the public to promptly report such cases to the authorities for appropriate legal action.
While expressing confidence that election officials would exercise due caution during the hearings, the parties also sought strict legal action against officials who fail to discharge their duties.
Highlighting the logistical challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon season, the parties said Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) are under considerable pressure due to difficult terrain, poor road connectivity in remote villages and inadequate manpower.
In view of these challenges, the parties appealed to the Election Commission to extend the current August 4, 2026 deadline for the SIR exercise, saying additional time would help ensure a more accurate and comprehensive revision of the electoral rolls.
Following the meeting, representatives of the participating political parties and MZP leaders met Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ethel Rotluangpuii to discuss the implementation of the electoral roll revision and convey the resolutions adopted during the all-party meeting, the leader said.
According to the draft electoral roll published on July 4 after the SIR conducted between May 30 and June 28, there were 8,28,906 electors, including 4,29,881 female voters, across all 11 districts of the state.
Election officials said a total of 46,163 enumeration forms (5.28 per cent) remained uncollected.
Of these, 21,295 electors (2.43 per cent) were found to have died, 13,978 (1.60 per cent) had permanently shifted, probably to other states or foreign countries, 8,333 (0.95 per cent) were untraceable or absent despite repeated visits, and 2,248 (0.26 per cent) were already enrolled elsewhere, they said.
Additionally, 309 voters whose names appeared in the 2025 electoral roll refused to be enrolled during the SIR on religious grounds, the officials said.
